What is Digital Printing?
With digital printing, digitized graphic information contained
within an electronic art file goes directly to a wide format
digital printer that has anywhere from four to eighteen print
heads. The quality of digital printing output is measured in terms
of dots per inch (dpi) that can vary from less than 100 dpi up to
1,440 dpi. The higher the dpi the better print quality or
resolution.
How can you give me the best resolution on my digital print?
The single most important factor affecting the quality of the
print we produce for you is the quality of the artwork /
electronic files you provide to us. The higher / better the
resolution going in, the better looking the finished print.
Will a small image lose print quality when printed as a large
format image?
Yes, because as image size increases, the resolution goes
down. For example, if you provide us with a 300 dpi image
(at original size) and ask us to print it five times larger, then
the finished print will have a resolution of 60 dpi.
In the preceding example, is 60 dpi on the finished print a good
enough resolution?
Well, it depends on the application viewing distance.
What is “application viewing distance”?
The application viewing distance is the distance that the
viewer typically views the image from. A billboard, for
example, is typically viewed from hundred of yards away. As
such, a billboard does not require a high resolution; 30 dpi is
more than sufficient. Truck graphics and banners are usually
viewed from 10, 25 or 50 feet away so the resolution needs to be
higher. Wall murals are at times viewed from very close-up.
As such they should be printed at a high dpi (300 dpi minimum) so
that the print looks good at a viewing distance of 2-to-3 feet.
Things like posters, labels and sticker that are all viewed
close-up should be printed at as high a resolution as permitted by
the supplied artwork.
We always print at the maximum resolution permitted by the
artwork / electronic print files you provide, so that you get the
best quality print. If you have questions about resolution
and print quality for a specific project, please call
1-800-423-4371 for project-specific advice.
Can you scan my images?
Yes. And we can also do any other pre-press work you may
need such as design edits or image manipulation.
Is there any size limitation to what you print?
We can digitally print images up to 52 inches wide by any
length. Images wider that 52 inches are typically
"tiled" or printed out like wallpaper, with each
successive panel overlapping the preceding panel by 1/4 to 1/2
inch.
What materials can you print on?
We print on pressure-sensitive, self-adhesive vinyls of all
types including opaque, translucent, clear, reflective, removable,
conformable, permanent and static cling vinyls; scrim vinyl
(a.k.a. banner material), soft fabrics, backlit film, canvas,
weather weave, wet-strength paper, Tyvek ® and more.
How should I set up the files I’m going to send to you?
For best possible results you should provide us CMYK files.
We can also accept RGB files, which we convert to CMYK.
Scanned images should be scanned at no less that 300dpi at 1/4
size of the final printed piece. See Preparing
& Sending Files for detailed information.
How should I send files to you?
We accept files on CD-R, ZIP (250 & 100 MB) or DVD-R.
You can email us smaller files; larger files should be uploaded to
our ftp site. See Preparing
& Sending Files for full details.
